Friends of the Semel Institute Research Scholars Program

2019-2021 Application

The Friends of the Semel Institute is committed to helping develop the next generation of researchers of the mind and brain in health and disease. The backbone of the Friends Scholar Program is starter grants of $25,000 per year for up to two years, focused particularly upon assisting young investigators who are building their careers. All applications will be reviewed by a panel of Semel Institute scientists and board members of The Friends of the Semel Institute. Those receiving a Friends starter award will be named a Friends' Scholar.

Applications are due by 12:00 PM on September 15, 2019 and submitted to Wendy Kelman at  WKelman@mednet.ucla.edu

 

Eligibility

  • Post-doctoral scientists in training at UCLA’s Semel Institute.

  • Junior faculty (Assistant Professor or equivalent) conducting research in the Semel Institute

  • Established investigators (Assistant or Associate Professor) launching a new line of research that does not yet have independent support

  • Strong preference is given to translational research projects that do not currently have adequate financial support.

 

Instructions
Applications should include the following sections in the following order:

  1.  Cover page or application form 

  2.  Abstract:  use lay-language, limit to one paragraph or about 500 words

  3.  Synopsis:  Statement of aims and/or hypotheses, with statement of potential for extramural funding; limit to one page

  4.  Scientific protocol; limit to five pages, not including references.

  5. NIH style biosketch; include other support if present; limit to four pages

  6. Detailed budget: limit to one page

  7. Budget justification; limit to one page

  8.  Timeline for the project; limit to one page

  9.  Documentation of appropriate IRB or ARC submission

  10.  Application checklist

 

Application Process

  • Applications must be received by 12:00 PM, September 15, 2019. Applications received later than this date will not be reviewed.

  • Application must include each of the above named sections as listed above, and should be submitted as a single electronic file, in PDF format.

  • Notification of awards will be made on or about January 14, 2020

 

Expectations of those receiving Friends Starter Award

  • Friends Scholars will be asked to present updates on their research to the Board Members of the Friends and/or the Institute in general.

  • Friends Scholars will be asked to attend one or more Friends receptions to meet donors who supported the program.

  • Friends Scholars will be required to submit to The Friends a year-end report of research progress that may be shared with donors.
