Please join UCLA's Friends of the Semel Institute for an Open Mind program with Anne Harrington, Ph.D., author of the new critically acclaimed book, Mind Fixers..Psychiatry's Troubled Search for the Biology of Mental Illness.
In Mind Fixers, Dr. Harrington, the Franklin L. Ford Professor of the History of Science, and Director and Faculty Dean, Pforzheimer House at Harvard University, explores psychiatry’s repeatedly frustrated struggle to understand mental disorder in biomedical terms. Dr. Harrington shows how the stalling of early twentieth century efforts in this direction allowed Freudians and social scientists to insist, with some justification, that they had better ways of analyzing and fixing minds.
Kelsey Martin, M.D., Ph.D., Dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Professor of Biological Chemistry, Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, will join Dr. Harrington in discussion following her presentation.
