The Friends of the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA is dedicated to improving the lives of people with mental illness by supporting research to advance innovative treatments and sponsoring educational programs to raise awareness and erase stigma.

The Friends sponsor and produce the Open Mind, a lecture and film series  that brings together thought leaders in science and culture to present educational programs about mental health issues as a free public service to the community. The Friends Scholar Program supports translational research being done by the next generation of early career scientists to both unlock the secrets of the mind and brain, and develop new and innovative treatments to improve the lives of the millions of people who live with a mental illness or disorder.
